Victim/Witness Services for Coconino County

Volunteer Program Description

Services:

Victim/Witness Services is a private non-profit organization, which provides advocacy to victims of crime and crisis throughout Coconino County. The main services that are provided are crisis response, criminal justice advocacy, and victim compensation benefits. The entire Victim/Witness team responds to child and adult victims of crime and crisis including: domestic violence, assault, sex assault, child abuse – physical and sexual, homicide, DUI crimes, and death notification.

Volunteer Needs:

The Victim Advocate Volunteer Program is a two-part program. The first part is a crisis response team. After completing the in-house training of 20 hours, the volunteers will respond on-scene, in a team, to assist victims of crime and crisis. The team is paged out by law enforcement or the hospital to provide crisis intervention, which entails the provision of crisis counseling and appropriate referrals based on the needs of each specific client. The second part of the volunteer program is the in-office portion. These volunteers go through a briefer training and volunteer during office hours to assist with courtroom advocacy, emergency legal advocacy, fundraising, and general in-office support.

Volunteer Criteria:

Volunteers are carefully screened throughout the training period. During this period they will be considered “pre-volunteers” as we are assessing their readiness to work with victims of crime and crisis. The screening included fingerprint clearance as well as two interviews: one before the training and one when the training is completed
