Crime Victim Compensation Program

The Crime Victims Compensation Program is state and federal monies set aside to assist victims of crime with out of pocket expenses that are a direct result of the crime.  Victims must apply for compensation in the county in which the crime occurred.  They must also meet the following eligibility requirements:

·        The crime occurs within Arizona

·        The crime is reported to law enforcement within 72 hours of discovery, unless there is good cause for delay

·        An application for the program is filed within 2 years of the discovery of the crime, unless there is good cause for delay

·        The victim willingly cooperates with law enforcement

·        The victim suffers physical injury or extreme mental distress as a direct result of the crime

·        The victim incurs economic loss as a direct result of the crime which is not covered by a collateral source.

Compensation is a payer of last resort and is not a guaranteed payment source, as funds are very limited.  Compensation can cover medical costs, counseling, funerals, and work loss.  It cannot pay for crime scene cleanup, property loss/repair, pain and suffering, attorney fees, or copying fees.  Persons who are serving a sentence of imprisonment or escaped imprisonment in a detention facility, home arrest, or work furlough are not eligible to receive compensation for victimization.

An application for Crime Victim Compensation Program can be obtained through Victim/Witness Services, either by requesting one to be mailed to you or by picking one up in person.  The application can also be printed out online: Microsoft Word Application or PDF Application. Advocates are also available to assist victims with filling the application out.
